Marrel vs Hook Lift

Two Bin Types. Very Different Trucks.

At Apex Bins we operate two distinct types of skip bins in Point Cook and across the City of Wyndham: Marrel skip bins and Hook Lift skip bins. Choosing the right type comes down to your property access, driveway type, bin size needed and the nature of your waste.

The bin type affects more than just how it looks — it determines the truck size that will need to access your street, how the bin is lowered, and how much care is needed to protect your driveway surface.

Marrel Bins

How Marrel Skip Bins Work

Marrel skip bins are the most common type of skip bin hired for domestic waste in the City of Wyndham. These bins are delivered using marrel trucks fitted with hydraulic lifting arms and chains that raise and lower the bin from the rear of the truck. The system allows the bin to be carefully positioned onto driveways and tighter residential properties commonly found across Point Cook's newer estates and older streets.

Marrel bins are particularly well suited to areas with standard suburban driveways and slightly restricted access, because the trucks are generally more compact and manoeuvrable than larger hook lift vehicles. Their shorter wheelbase makes reversing into residential driveways across Hoppers Crossing, Williams Landing and Tarneit far more practical.

How a Marrel Bin is Placed

A marrel skip bin is lowered using hydraulic arms and chains attached to both sides of the bin. As the truck tilts, the rear rollers contact the surface first before the front of the bin is lowered into place. During collection, the process is reversed. Because the bin pivots during loading and unloading, there can be movement where the rollers contact the driveway.

You may use timber protection boards under skip contact points to protect your driveway. Decorative concrete, exposed aggregate and asphalt driveways can be marked if bins are placed incorrectly or are overloaded.

Hook Lift Bins

How Hook Lift Skip Bins Work

Hook lift skip bins — often called hook bins — are larger industrial-style bins commonly used for commercial, construction and demolition waste in Point Cook and across the City of Wyndham. These bins are distinctly identified by the "A-shaped" steel frame at the front, which the hook arm on the truck latches on to for loading and unloading.

The hook lift system loads and unloads the bin by rolling it along steel rollers and rails at the rear of the truck. Unlike marrel bins, hook lift bins are generally longer and designed to carry significantly larger waste volumes — from bulky building materials and timber through to large-scale renovation, demolition and commercial waste.

Access Requirements for Hook Lift Trucks

Hook lift trucks are substantially larger vehicles and require more clearance — both vertically and horizontally — during delivery and collection. On the newer estates and wider streets of Point Cook and Wyndham Vale, access is usually straightforward, but factors like parked cars, overhead trees and tight turning areas should always be considered before booking a hook lift bin.

Customers should discuss access requirements at time of booking so we can confirm the most appropriate bin type and truck for safe delivery.

Protecting Your Driveway

Which Bin Type Is Better for Driveways?

Both marrel and hook lift skip bins can be safely placed on residential driveways with proper care, but each system interacts differently with the ground surface.

Marrel bins pivot during loading and unloading, the rear rollers contact the driveway first, which can leave marks or scratches on decorative concrete or exposed aggregate if driveway protection is not used. Hook lift bins generally roll more directly along the truck rails, reducing some pivoting motion, but the heavier weight of larger hook bins can still mark surfaces under load.

The condition of your driveway, the weight of your waste, and weather conditions all play a role. Always mention your driveway type when booking — particularly if you have decorative concrete, paving or asphalt.

  • Timber boards placed at contact points can reduce marking.
  • Bins must not be overfilled or overloaded — weight limits apply.
  • Tell us your driveway surface at booking for the safest placement method.
